Lauburu publishes their sixth album, available in compact and cassette

A cover which depicts an ancient Celtic symbol -two snakes intertwined- and a title "Balusko Zinta Beltz", (Black Velvet Band); two elements which unite things Celtic and things Basque, the Gaelic cross, and the Lauburu, are a true reflection of the contents of a record in which the alboka and the bagpipes are heard together, and where Irish and Breton melodies embrace the ancestral airs of the High Pyrenées in Zuberoa. Etxahun and O'Carolan meet in this compact; both travelling bards, both lovers of good drink and better music, speakers of languages which cohabited in ancient Navarre. Hartz, Harri, Adarra... words which mean the same in Euskera and in Gaelic. Two peoples who count in twenties but whose origins are lost in the annals of time, come together in the new compact launched by "LAUBURU".

John Taylor, co-founder of Lauburu with Xabier Zabala and composer and/or arranger of the songs:

"The musical line followed by the group continues to be the same, but with certain novelties. Here it is a must to mention the voice of Lore Elorriaga, a young woman from Mungia (Vizcaya), who brings richness of expression and a warmth which at times seems almost Mediterranean to the songs she sings. To my mind, the vocal quality of Xabier and Lore, both separately and in duo, is one of our main virtues. As regards instruments. On the musical side, more than a dozen instruments can be heard on the record. Thus, we have the sound backing of Maialen Zuazua on accordion, Mary Dyer on violin, and my melodic support on tin whistle, alboka (the Basque hornpipe), bagpipes, asubío (a 2 cm long ocarina), mandolin, etc...etc... On the rhythmic side, we have the guitars, the banjo and the bodhran (Irish goat-skin drum)".

Where did you record this album?

"Lately, we've been recording in Donosti, (Guipuzkoa's capital), but the need to travel there, to and from Bilbao, often makes it difficult to produce a relaxed product. We are a group based in Bizkaia and we have now come back home, to cut this compact".

Are Ireland and Euskadi really so much alike?

There are many similarities in their history and their current reality, in their scenery and their music, their traditions like the discoid tombstones, even their languages share certain words, syntax, way of counting, etc...."

For the first time we have a song in English on a record in Euskera; what do you think the reaction will be among the Basque public?

"This song is Irish and I feel that it will go down well due to its lively melody and words. On the other hand, we have been singing it for years in our repertoire. The mixture of different cultures is an enriching element in any field. I myself am a 'foreign signing', my son Sean was born here and we are both euskaldunak. The Basque people guard their traditions and their language proudly, but they are also glad to welcome non-native elements which are akin to their likes. I am glad that Lauburu has been a pioneer in this field and that the song Black Velvet Band will sound loud and clear in the Durango Festival" (the main venue of novelties in the Basque book and record field).

Are you satisfied with "Balusko Zinta Beltz" and what do you expect of it?

"There´s always room for improvement, but the final sound is quite brilliant. It's our first digital work and compact format always gives greater quality to the end product. I´m especially pleased at the public's reaction which has been tremendous so far. The record will be on sale in several foreign countries and I think it will also be well received at national Spanish level. We are told that it'll be a success in Galicia, and I would like it to be heard in Ireland also, where some groups have already recorded Basque tunes. Nevertheless, my main wish it that people will love it here, in the Basque Country. .

"Taldeak estilo berbera jarraitzen du, baina aldaketa batzuk aipatzea ezinbestekoa da. Hemen Lore Elorriagaren ahotsa aipatzea derrigorrezkoa da, Mungiako gazte honek abestietan jartzen duen espresio aberasgarria batzutan aire Mediterraniarra gogoraraziz, berebiziko garrantzia du. Nire iritziz, Xabier eta Loreren ahotsen kalitatea, bai elkarrekin, bai banaturik, gure balore garrantzitsuenetarikoak lirateke. Musika arloan, instrumentu ezberdin ditugu, alde batetik, Maialen Zuazuaren lan tinkoa genuke, Mary Dyer bibolinarekin batera, bestetik nire parte hartzea hainbat melodietan, hala nola, flauta irlandarra, alboka, gaita, asubioa, okarina, manolina eta abar. Erritmo arloan, kitarrak, banjoa eta bodhrana genituzke".

Zuen azken lana Bilbon grabatu duzute ezta?

"Azken aldi honetan egin ditugun grabazioak Donostian izan dira, baina batzutan, joan-etorrietan ibiltzeak oztopatzen gintuen grabazioa egiterako orduan. Bizkaian bizi gara, beraz, "etxera" etorri gara konpakto hau grabatzera".

¿Baina benetan horrenbesteko antza dute Euskadi eta Irlanda?

Bai, bere historian, gaur egungo errealitate sozialean, paisaian eta musikan, hala ohituretan nola hildakoen lorratz biribiletan, hizkuntza biek ere esanahi berbera duten hitz batzuk dituzte eta sintaxian eta kondatzeko eran ere ikus dezakegu euren arteko antza".

Lehen aldiz dugu abesti ingelesa bat euskeraz eginiko disko batean. Zer nolako harrera izango du euskaldun jende artean?

"Abestia, bera, irrlandarra da eta uste dut bertoko jendeari asko gustatuko zaiola, batez ere duen melodia bizia eta gaiagaitik, beste aldetik aspaldi gabiltza abesten gure kantaldietan. Kulturen arteko eraginari aberasdarria deritzot edozein arlotan. Ni neu "fitxaje" atzerritarra naiz eta nire semea Sean berton jaiokoa da eta biok gara euskaldunak. Euskal Herriak badaki bere ohiturak eta hizkuntza mantentzen baina baita kanpotik datozkion bere gustoko elementu arrotzak hartzen ere. Pozik nago zentzu honetan LAUBURU taldea aitzindari izanaz eta uste dut 'Black Velvet Band' deritzon abestia, hau da konpaktoari izena ematen diona, Durangoko azokan entzungo dela".

Pozik zaude "Balusko Zinta Beltz" lanarekin eta zer espero duzu?

"Beti daude hobetu daitezkeen gauzak baina, azken soinua benetan zoragarria da. Digitalean egindako gure lehen lana da eta honek beti ematen dio aparteko kalitatea. Beste aldetik, diskoa salgai jarriko da hemendik kanpoko zenbait herrialdietan eta Estatu mailan ere harrera ona izango duelakoan nago. Galizian, esaterako, ziurtatu digute liluratuko duela diskoak, eta gustatuko litzaidake Irlandan ere entzungo balitz. Hango talderen batek (Dervish hain zuzen) grabatu du hemengo zerbait eta interesgarria litzateke hemendik at gure euskal musika gehiago entzungo balu jendeak. Dena den, garrantzitsuena da hemen, etxean, gustokoa izatea.

Una portada que depicta un milenario símbolo celta -dos serpientes que se entrelazan- y un título, "Balusko Zinta Beltz", (la cinta de terciopelo negro); dos elementos que unen lo celta y lo vasco, la cruz gaélica y el lauburu, y que son fiel reflejo del contenido de un disco donde la alboka suena junto a la gaita, y donde melodías de Irlanda y Bretaña se abrazan con los aires ancestrales del Alto Pirineo suletino. Etxahun y O'Carolan se reúnen en este compacto, bertsolaris itinerantes los dos, amantes de la buena bebida y la mejor música, poseedores de lenguas que ya cohabitaron en la antigua Navarra. Hartz, Harri, Adarra, palabras que dicen lo mismo en euskera que en gaélico. Dos pueblos que cuentan en veintenas, pero que se remontan milenios, se dan cita en el nuevo trabajo de "LAUBURU".

John Taylor, cofundador con Xabier Zabala de Lauburu, y compositor y arreglista de los temas:

"La línea musical del grupo sigue siendo la misma, pero con ciertas novedades. Aquí es obligatorio citar la voz de Lore Elorriaga, una joven Mungiarra que aporta riqueza expresiva y una calidez a veces casi mediterránea a los temas en que interviene. A mi juicio, la calidad vocal de Xabier y Lore, juntos y por separado es uno de nuestros principales valores. En la parte musical, suenan una docena larga de instrumentos. Así, tenemos una labor sólida de la acordeonista Maialen Zuazua, como respaldo al violin de Mary Dyer y al apoyo melódico que presto yo en flauta irlandesa, alboka, gaita, asubío, ocarina, mandolina, etc... En lo rítmico están las guitarras, el banjo y el bodhran".

Donde habeis grabado vuestro último trabajo?

Hemos venido grabando últimamente en Donosti, pero la necesidad de desplazarse impide a veces un trabajo más reposado a la hora de plasmar la grabación. Somos un grupo basado en Bizkaia y ahora hemos "vuelto a casa" para este compacto.

¿Realmente se parecen tanto Euskadi e Irlanda?

Se parecen en su historia y su realidad presente, en su paisaje y su música, en sus tradiciones como sus estelas funerarias circulares, incluso sus lenguas comparten algunas palabras, sintáxis, manera de contar etc..."

Por primera vez aparece un tema en inglés en un disco en euskera; ¿Qué aceptación va a tener entre el público euskaldun?

"La canción en cuestión es irlandesa y pienso que va a gustar mucho por su viva melodía y su temática. Por otro lado, hace años que la venimos cantando en nuestras actuaciones. La mezcla de culturas diversas es enriquecedora en cualquier campo. Yo mismo soy un 'fichaje extranjero', mi hijo Sean es nacido aquí y ambos somos euskaldunes. El pueblo vasco sabe mantener sus tradiciones y su lengua pero también sabe acoger a todo lo que le es afin. Estoy contento de que Lauburu haya sido pionero en este campo y que la canción 'Black Velvet Band', que da nombre al compacto, vaya a sonar en la feria de Durango".

¿Estás satisfecho con "Balusko Zinta Beltz" y qué esperas de él?

"Siempre hay cosas que podrían mejorarse, pero el sonido final es realmente brillante. Es nuestro primer trabajo en digital y el formato de compacto siempre da mayor calidad. Por otra parte, el disco se va a poner a la venta en varios países fuera de aquí y pienso que a nivel nacional también va a gustar. En Galicia nos aseguran que va a encantar, y me gustaría que se oyera mucho en Irlanda, donde por cierto algún grupo (Dervish por ejemplo) ya ha grabado algún tema vasco, y sería bonito que se fuera conociendo más la música de aquí. Con todo, lo más importante es que guste aquí, en casa.
