GEORGE BRABAZON

One of the beautiful melodies composed by the blind Irish harper, Turlogh O´Carolan 250 years ago, dedicated to one George Brabazon, a local patron of the arts.

KONDEAREN ALABA

Variant of the typical legend of man of humble birth maries dame of noble standing, though here using an original method. The idea comes from an old Irish story.

BLACK VELVET BAND

The potato famine which raged through Ireland (1845-47) and halved the population, did not prevent the British administration from exporting foodstuffs from Ireland and deporting peasants for the theft of a loaf of bread. Australia soon gained a non-indigenous population, composed mainly of banished Irishmen, Scothmen and Welshmen. Many are the Irish songs which tell of the deportation days. In this one, the citizan is from Belfast and the reason for deportation is the supposed theft of a gold watch. Tasmanian whalers are known to have had a version of this song called "the hat with the black velvet band" and it would have been known to any Basque whalers who in the Antipodes.

ERHAZTUNA

Just like "Urtxapala" by Etxahun, this is the story of a man who spurns a poor girl in order to marry into money, regretting it ever after.

EZKONDU NITZANEAN

The verses come from Gipuzkoa and tell us the stoy of woman whose marital bliss ended the day after her wedding.

HIL KEXUA

Jef ar Penven was a Breton piper, whose premature death inspired this soulful lament. The original tital is "Marv Jef ar Penven" (the death of Jef ar Penven). It is followed by a Breton dance, previously recorded by us in 6-note version for the Alboka (Basque hornpipe).

BI AHIZPAK

One of the social satires of the greatest of all Basque poets, Pierre Topet (Etxahun) born in Barcus (Barkoxe), Zuberoa, on 26th. July, 1786and known as "the Basque Verlaine". It was this kind of observation on the life of his fellow townsfolks, together with the tragic circumstances of his life and his criticisms of the clergy, that sent him into exile during the greater part of his life. He died in his town town, on his 76th. birthday.

AHETZEKO ANDERIA

An old legend from Zuberoa, going back to 1422, in which year Domenja de Ahetze married Menanton de Ruthie, lord of Ürrutia palacel, which still stands today in Altzürükü, Zuberoa, at the foot of the Pyrenées. She was as faithful as her huisband was suspicious and violent. The melody is a variant of the famous Basque song 'Txoriñuak kaiolan'.

EZPATA DANTZA

Many are the peoples o Eurpoe who have preserved some kind of sword dance. We can cite the Scottish sword dance, the Russian sabre dance, the English Morris dances or the various stick dances of the Iberian peninsula. All evoke battles and defense of the land. Of all these dances, the Basque ezpata dantza is perhaps the most beautiful and difficult to perform. It originates from Berriz, Vizcaya, and is of great antiquity. The words are adapted from a round sung in Behorlegi, Basse Navarre, at carnaval time.

GAZTALONDOKO NESKATILAK

Another of Etxahun's satires. Three girls from Gaztalondo (in the neighbourhood of Barkoxe, Zuberoa) go for a walk up the Madaleine (a hermitage on top of a mountain of the same name 795 metres high, between Barkoxe y Atharratze, {French Basque Country}). They return by a different route, whre they meet some local lads. Etxahun tells us the rest of the story. The beautiful melody is "Ürzo bat jin izan da".

Turlogh O´Carolan Irlandako arpista itsu ospetsuenak orain 250 urte egin zituen doinu ederretariko bat dugu hau. George Brabazon zeritzon bere mezenas bati eskainirik.

KONDEAREN ALABA

Irlandako kondaira zahar horrek Euskalherrian dauzka bere antzekoak. Gizon lau bat, leinu goiko emakume batekin ezkontzen da, bide originala erabiliz bere amodio beregantzeko.

BLACK VELVET BAND

Irlando soildu zuen gose handiak (1845-47) biztanle kopuru erdiraino txikitu zuenak, ez zen oztoporik britaniar administralgoak Irlandatik janariak exportatu eta herritarrek ogi baten lapurketagatik deportatzen jarraitzeko. Australiak ez-jatorrizko poblazio bat berehala bereganatu zuen, gehien baten Irlandar herbesteraturik eginik. Anitz dira Irlandako kantuak deportazioaren ganean egindakoak. Hemengo honetan, biztanlea Belfast hirikoa da eta herbestearen arrazoia da erloju baten balizko lapurketa.

Gipuzkoatik datozkigun bertso hauek zera kontatzen digute: nola neska ezkonberri baten poztasuna ezkontegunaren biharamonean amaitzen den.

Jef ar Penven kornamusajole bretaniarra izan zen. Bere heriotza, gazte izanik, hil kexu eder hori iradoki zuen. Bere jatorrizko izena "Marv Jef ar Penven" da (Jef ar Penvenen heriotza). Bretaniako dantza bat doakio jarraian.

EZPATA DANTZA

Europako herri askok bere folklorean ezpata dantza motaren bat gorde du. Eskoziarrek "sword dance" deritzona, Errusiarrek "sable dantza", Inglaterrako "morris dance" edota Iberiar Penintsulako makil-dantzak, aipatu beharrean gaude. Denek borroka eta lurraren babespidea oroiterazten dute. Guzti honen artean, euskal ezpata dantza ederrena bide da, bere exekuzioan. Bizkaiko Berriz herrikoa omen da, eta antzin-antzinakoa dudarik gabe. Hitzak egokituak dira, Iparraldeko Behorlegiko erronda-kantaren antzera.

Etxahunen beste satira bat. Gaztalondoko (Barkoxeko auzunea) neskatila batzuk igotzen dira Madalenaraino (Barkoxe y Atharratze bitarteko izena bera daukan 795 metroko mendi tontorrean dagoen ermita). Bidean itzulirik, galan gazte batzuengana joaten dira. Gainerakoa, Etxahunek kontatzen digu. Doinu eder hau, Zuberoko "Ürzo bat jin izan da" deritzona da.

Una de las bellas melodías que compuso el afamado arpista ciego irlandés Turlogh O´Carolan hace 250 años, dedicada a un tal George Brabazon, un mecenas local.

KONDEAREN ALABA

Variante de la típica leyenda del hombre llano que se casa con dama de alta cuna, valiéndose en este caso de un método original para conquistarla. La idea viene de un viejo cuento irlandés.

BLACK VELVET BAND

La gran hambruna que asoló Irlanda (1845-47) y que redujo la población a la mitad, no impidió a la administración británica seguir exportando comida de Irlanda y deportando a los campesinos por el robo de un pan para comer. Australia pronto se encontró con una población no indígena, compuesta principalmente por irlandeses desterrados. Muchas son las canciones irlandesas que versan sobre la deportación. En ésta, el ciudadano es de Belfast y el motivo del destierro es el supuesto robo de un reloj.

ERHAZTUNA

Al igual que "Urtxapala" de Etxahun, es la historia de un hombre que rechaza su verdadero amor para casarse cómodamente, lamentando después su elección.

EZKONDU NITZANEAN

Los versos vienen de Gipuzkoa y nos cuentan la historia de una muchacha cuya felicidad matrimonial acaba al día siguiente de la boda.

HIL KEXUA

Jef ar Penven fue un gaitero bretón, cuya muerte prematura inspiró este bello lamento, el nombre original del cual es "Marv Jef ar Penven" (la muerte de Jef ar Penven), le sigue una danza bretona.

BI AHIZPAK

Una de las sátiras sociales del más grande de los bardos vascos Pierre Topet (Etxahun) nacido en Barcus (Barkoxe), Zuberoa, el 26 de julio de 1786 y conocido como el 'Verlaine vasco'. Fueron este tipo de agudas observaciones sobre la vida de sus convecinos lo que, unido a las trágicas circunstancias de su vida particular y sus críticas al clero, le granjearon el exilio durante la mayor parte de su vida. Murió en su casa natal en 1862, el día de su 76 cumpleaños.

AHETZEKO ANDERIA

Antigua leyenda de Zuberoa que data de 1422, año en que se casó Domenja de Ahetze con Menanton de Ruthie, señor del palacio de Ürrutia, que sigue en pie hoy día en Altzürükü, Zuberoa. Era tan fiel ella, como suspicaz y violento él. La melodía es una variante deTxoriñuak kaiolan.

EZPATA DANTZA

Son muchos los pueblos de Europa que han guardado en su folklore algún tipo de baile de espadas. Podemos citar al sword dance escocés, el baile de los sables ruso, los morris dances ingleses, o los numerosos bailes de palos de la península ibérica. Todos evocan la batalla y la defensa de la tierra propia. De todos ellos, la famosa ezpata dantza vasca quizás sea la más bella en su ejecución. Parece haber nacido en los alrededores de Berriz, Vizcaya, e indudablemente tiene gran antiguëdad. La letra está adaptada a la manera de la canción de ronda que se canta por carnavales en Behorlegi, Baja Nabarra.

GAZTALONDOKO NESKATILAK

Otra sátira de Etxahun. Unas chicas de Gaztalondo (barrio de Barkoxe, Zuberoa) van de paseo a la Madalena (ermita en la cumbre del monte del mismo nombre, de 795 metros de altura, que se halla entre Barkoxe y Atharratze). Vuelven por distinto camino, donde se encuentran con unos chicos locales. Lo demás nos cuenta Etxahun. La hermosa melodía es la misma que "Ürzo bat jin izan da".
