ZUBIAGA

This name is first found Galdakano, Guecho, Meņaka, Berriz and Torre in Lendoņo de Arriba (all in Vizcaya) and also in Motrico (Guipuzcoa).

This surname means "The Place of the Bridge." From "Zubi" (bridge) and the suffix denoting locality, "aga" (place of). It may also have another meaning as some authors note that it could have something to do with a certain variety of chestnut.

The coat of arms is as follows: On a field of green is a stone tower with a stone bridge in front of the gate over waves (representing water) of blue and silver.
