Irisarri

IRISARRI the usual form of this surname is IRISARRI, but there are many variations: IRISARRY, IRISSARY, IRRISARRI, IRRISARRY, IRIZARRI, YRIZARI etc..

The meaning of this surname is: IRI means group of houses, or town, and SARRI means thickset (refered to trees, forest, thickets etc..) or Thick forest. So the meaning is something like, The group of houses near the thickset.

The way you (the original requestor) write your surname is typical in branches of this family in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina (there are also in the Basque Country).

The origin of this surname is a house in Ianzy or Yanzi, in Navarra, with houses derived from this in Villatuerta, and Azketa (both in Navarre). But there is another very old house with this name in IHOLDI in Baxe-Navarre, in the French Basque Country; this name of this house is documented since 1352, but it could also be the house IRIZURI mentioned in documents of 1186; I believe that this one is the real origin of the surname.

There are branches of this family in the whole Basque Country (Spanish and French), and of course in Spain, France and America (Terranova included).

There are a lot of coats of arms of this surname depending on the branch. The coat of the Branche IRIZARRI (the only branch with Z) is: En sinople dos torres de oro puestas en faja. This Z branch exists (or existed) in Bizkaia, Colombia, Argentina, Navarre, Mexico and Terre Neuve

There is also a coat of the branche of Chili.

Aida L. Irizarry writes Irizarry is also found in San German, Puerto Rico, where a branch of the family settled in 1819. I would love you to add this piece of the missing puzzle to your page. I'm very proud of this name and of my ancestors who carried it to our shores.

My husband is George Virgil Irizary. His father, Virgilio Yrizarry was born in San German, Puerto Rico, 24 December 1899. His parents are recorded as Jose Ramon Yrizarry who was born about 1871 in San German, and mother Cruz Sepulveda was born about 1875 in San German (death in 1901). Following the death of his mother in 1901, we understand that Virgilio was taken in by a Methodist minister's family for many years. We do not know the name of that Methodist minister. Virgilio had a sister Anna Yrizarry who migrated to New York City, and a brother Louis Yrizarry who was last heard from in Puerto Rico. When the Methodist minister asked permission to "adopt" Virgilio and pay for further education, Virgilio says his birth father became upset and refused; Virgilio left Puerto Rico and migrated to Hilo, Hawaii where he met my husband's mother, Encarnacion Fernandez, whose parents were born in Granada, Spain. Encarnacion was born on Sept. 5, 1907 in Hilo, Hawaii shortly after her parents arrived at Waiakea Camp 5, Hilo, Hawaii. My husband's parents, Virgilio Yrizarry & Encarnacion Fernandez, were marred in San Francisco, 26 December 1930. Shortly after, Virgilio changed the spelling of the family name to Irizary. We would love to hear from anyone who may be related to our family. We live in Northern California. Looking forward to hearing from you, George & Arlene Irizary, irizary@juno.com

My name is Pablo Pavin Irizarry from the Utica, New York area and my family is extensive. It has ancestors from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Chicago, and New York City. I have been researching this surname for many years. It is a difficult under taking. Here is a useful tidbit for anyone interested. There is a small town in French Basque country with the name Irissari or similar spelling. It can only be found on really good maps of France. I bought mine at Barnes and Noble. Some 30 years ago I wrote to its mayor. I still have not heard from him/her. If someone else has patience and the time to maybe translate a good letter this small town probably has some very useful history. They may not have a budget to respond by snail mail so you may have to invest in International Postal Coupons (IPCs) if these things are still issued and include them in the letter for them to use as money for postage. If anyone gets lucky please let me know. Good luck on your investigations and research!

Hi my name is Wendy Irizarry.

My father recently passed and he originated from Cabo Rojo, PR. His name is Wilfredo Irizary aka "Freddy". His mother's name is Hipolita Lopez and father's name is Benero (Venero) Irizarry.

His family is still in PR from La Parguera to Lajas, PR. The Mayor of Lajas is my dad's cousin- they call the Mayor "Turin".

The street where my dad grew up was renamed Avenida Don Benero Irizarry in my grandfather's honor.

We go visit every year to see the fam over there.

If you think you may be a relative- would like to hear from ya!!

Hello! My name is Jesus Pascual Yrrizarry, Jr. I live in Tucson, Arizona. I share my name with my father (Jesus Pascual Yrrizarry, Sr.). My grandfather Pascual Yrrizarry was born in 1899 and died in 1967 in Douglas, Arizona - I never met him (I was born in 1968). Not much is known about his life. From what I've been told he had blue eyes, light hair, he was a cook/chef, hunted lions. He lived in Guanajuato, Mexico, spent time in Douglas/Pirtleville, Arizona and SOME time in New Mexico. I have 1 uncle, 2 male cousins, and last but not least, MY 3 children; 1 son and 2 daughters who will all carry on this beautiful name. Just wondering if anybody out there who shares the name with the same spelling would know or know of my grandfather. I would love to know any information about this man and his life so I can teach my children about their name/ culture/ ancestors. ANY info would be appreciated. Also, if anybody has ANY info on a crest or coat of arms for THIS spelling, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you for your time! -Jesus Pascual Yrrizarry, Jr.

Hola,

http://www.paisvasco.com/heraldica/cgi-heral/heral.cgi?apellido=irisarri

I am from Yauco, my grandfather is Sergio Irizarry Irizarry, his dad was Pedro Irizarry Irizarry, my grandmother was Hilda Garcia Ayala, my mom is Rosa H. Irizarry Garcia. I am doing a Family Tree and all I know thus far is that my great great grandpa donated the land where the Alcadia in Yauco is, and there is a painting of him there, last time I was home, I asked about it, but no one could locate it. Anyway, if anyone has any information, please contact me. Thank you Lizbeth Rodriguez Irizarry
