Irisarri

IRISARRI the usual form of this surname is IRISARRI, but there are many variations: IRISARRY, IRISSARY, IRRISARRI, IRRISARRY, IRIZARRI, YRIZARI etc..

The meaning of this surname is: IRI means group of houses, or town, and SARRI means thickset (refered to trees, forest, thickets etc..) or Thick forest. So the meaning is something like, The group of houses near the thickset.

The way you (the original requestor) write your surname is typical in branches of this family in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina (there are also in the Basque Country).

The origin of this surname is a house in Ianzy or Yanzi, in Navarra, with houses derived from this in Villatuerta, and Azketa (both in Navarre). But there is another very old house with this name in IHOLDI in Baxe-Navarre, in the French Basque Country; this name of this house is documented since 1352, but it could also be the house IRIZURI mentioned in documents of 1186; I believe that this one is the real origin of the surname.

There are branches of this family in the whole Basque Country (Spanish and French), and of course in Spain, France and America (Terranova included).

There are a lot of coats of arms of this surname depending on the branch. The coat of the Branche IRIZARRI (the only branch with Z) is: En sinople dos torres de oro puestas en faja. This Z branch exists (or existed) in Bizkaia, Colombia, Argentina, Navarre, Mexico and Terre Neuve

There is also a coat of the branche of Chili.

Aida L. Irizarry writes Irizarry is also found in San German, Puerto Rico, where a branch of the family settled in 1819. I would love you to add this piece of the missing puzzle to your page. I'm very proud of this name and of my ancestors who carried it to our shores.

Find it fascinating how far the name Irizarry is actually spread around the world. My parents came from Puerto Rico, from the area of Guayanilla.
I was deployed to Saudi Arabia and while travelling through the city of Daharran i noticed a sign with "Irizarry and Son".
Does anyone have any idea how Our name comes to be in the Arab world?
Would be interesting what anyone may have on that

Hello all,
I wrote after the death of my abuelo, Cecilio Irizarry in Guanica, PR. My father is Damaso del Carmen Irizarry-Almodovar. I think Nazario is somewhere in my family's name too. It seems I have many cousins and relatives in PR that I never knew about, but am discovering through facebook and the reminiscing of my father as he ages and is recalling his childhood more and more. My abuelo had green eyes and they run throughout our strain of the Irizarry line. I'll be talking to my father to try and dig up more information. So fascinating to read all the entries. ~Carmen

Hey Aida, Please email me if you get a chance. My Grand father is Miguel Irizarry, lives in San German. I have been doing research for a while and I've concluded that we may be Jews from the Basque Country who were heavily persecuted and forced to leave. Oppressed by both French and Spanish powers. Check out this site: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0003_0_02218.html
This is the most comprehensive Jewish site on the web.
Check it out.

My goal is to try and put all these peices together and bring more pride and honor to our heritage.

My Name is Elizabeth Delgado (maiden name is Elizabeth Irizarry). I was born in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, partly raised in Coamo, Puerto Rico and spent most of my adult live in Chicago, Illinois. My father's name was Ismael Irizarry and my mother's name was Ida Celia Rodriguez. Daughter of Nicolasa Rodriguez and illegitimate daughter of Diego Castellar. Both my parents where born and raised in Guallanilla, Puerto Rico.My biggest dream is to visit and get to know my ancestor's country. I have always have this unexplained attraction and love for the basque country and what I consider my people. Maybe I can get in contact with some Irizarry's from the Basque country. I would also like to get in contact with the Castellar side of my mother's family.

The Irizarry name fascinates me. My mother was Irizarry Irizarry. I have yet to run across any information or close similarities in name to any of the Irizarrys in my family. If any of the generation of this noble family name are internet friendly, maybe you might know of those Irizarrys I have loved and lost. They are:Ambrosio Irizarry y Felicia Bonilla, padres de Juaquina Irizarry(Pina), Marcos Irizarry, Ramon Irizarry, Emilio Irizarry, Carmela Irizarry, Prudencia(Lenza) Irizarry, Juanita Irizarry, Maria Irizarry y Titi Irizarry.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings to all the Irizarry's! I am Manuel Osvaldo Irizarry-Rodríguez, born and raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and educated in the island. I live at present in Bryceville, Florida, a suburb of Jacksonville. My dad's named was as myself. My mom's named was Antonia María Rodríguez-Quetglas de Irizarry. My paternal grandparent's names were Ramón (Ramo) Irizarry and Dolores (Lola) Irizarry (they were not related). They lived most of their life in the Rosario, neighborhood of San German. My grandad's family were from Sabana Grande. My dad informed me that his family came to P.R. from the Basque region of Spain, specifically from the Bilbao area. He visited the region many times. He told me that in many occasions, when presenting his ID in such places as in a bank, when entering to Spain from France, in hotels, etc., when they saw his last name, they addressed him in Basque, which he didn't speak and or understand. I have visited Spain, including the Basque area, which is beautiful. I understand, from conversations with my grandfather and my father that in P.R. there are three Irizarry families: from Utuado-Adjuntas, San Germán and Sabana Grande. That from those three families all the Irizarry of the island came from. If somebody wants to establish contact with me, my e-mail is moijr@comcast.net.
