AROSTEGUY this is a basque surname very tipical, and exists in all the
basque regions, but the form you write it, it is clear from Iparralde
(Iparralde: North part, or French Basque Country, in Hegoalde (South Basque
Country) the tipical form is Arostegui, although the correct form to write
it is AROSTEGI, following the modern basque ortography , in any case the
ortography is not for the surnames so anybody can use the tradition of the
family or the modern rules.
The meaning of Arostegi is "The Carpenter's House" AROTZ: carpenter, TEGI:
place or house, can be Blacksmith's house, because in some parts of the
country, Arotz is blacksmith.
Mr. Jaime Kerexeta says in his book that the origin of the surname is
Bermeo, and there are bransches in the other regions, but I don't believe
that, a surname can have many original places, because basque surnames are
names of houses, and families toke their surnames from the name of the
house they lived, until the Trento Council that oblished to make baptism
records and to put to the children the same surname that their parents.
There exists families with this surname in Donibane-Garazi (St. Jean de
Pied de Port) and Baigorri (In Behenafarroa), and of corse in many villages
of Nafarroa, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, but it is clear which is the origin of
your surname.
There are a lot of Coat of Arms of Arostegi

| My maiden name was Georgia Ann Arosteguy, grandfather Jean (John) Arosteguy, born 1880 in Beyrie, Basses-Pyremess. France. His parents Pierre and Marie (Borderampe) Arostegny (spelling may have been eroneous in resource book) or name changed upon entry to the United States. He left home at 21 coming to the United State via Buenos Aires where he worked as a dairyman for two years before making his way to San Francisco and then on to to Fresno, California. He was the eldest child of four. It would be wonderful to locate those related to those who would be my great uncles or aunts. We have a great Basque population in the central valley of California. |

Hi, my name is Samuel Arostegui
As it has previously been mentioned by some of you, for the longest time I had a difficult time in finding about the history of our surname but I guess now thanks to the internet everything is changing. I could only recall a few bits and pieces of information that my grandfather gave me about the family name. Basically that it was Basque in origin but not much else. I currently live in El Paso, Texas which is predominantly Hispanic of a Mexican background. You can imagine the many attempts people try to make to pronounce my name correctly even here close to Mexico. Many initially believe or think that we are of Middle Eastern descent and hesitate in accepting that the surname is Spanish as the majority found in my region. I was surprised to see various links on the web to this surname. A couple of years back this was not the case. I usually let people know that any Arostegui out there is my relative and up to now it has been true, well at least, here in the regions of Texas, Chihuahua(MX), and New Mexico. My grandfather is Blas Arostegui and he and his family came from Santa Barbara, Chihuahua (Mexico). Both my sister and I are currently teachers with the goal of becoming College professors one day. Please e-mail me if you wish. |

AOSTRI, Burgos, may well be another place with AROTZ in its name.
This was recorded in 1108 as AJOSTRE.
From this we can postulate a Pre-Basque <*ALOST-URI "settlement of the smith or carpenter".
In Pre-Basque and Iberian, the word seems to have been ALOS or ALOTS. Indeed, this word is used exceptionally as an Iberian personal name compound element (I know of one instance).
Changing TEGI to TIGI has a fascinating historical parallel. In Iberian, the word was TIGI, hence the Roman towns, Artigi, Astigi, Cantigi, Lastigi, Saltigi, Sosontigi, all of them in the South of Spain. |
