Originally from Domezain (Zuberoa).
According to Mendizabal this surnames means Helechal (from "ara,"
helecho and the suffix denoting locality "ala") or pastoral. The reader
may want to note that Mr. Mendizabal assigns this meaning to a
tremendous percentage of Basque surnames.

De Kerexeta lists ARLA "zanja, foso, fisura entre montes".
