ARBURUA Jaime Kerexeta says in his Diccionario Onomastico y Heraldico Vasco, that the origin of this surname is located in Etxalar (North of Nabarra).

Meaning: it seems that this surname is composed by ARRI-BURUA, Arri means Rock, and BUrua means head, but with the sense in toponims of Top part or higher part. So the meaning is The higher part of the Rock, we must understand the meaning as: (The house) in the high part of the rocky place.

There are families with this surname in: Gipuzkoa: Donostia, Berrobi,Irun, LABURDI: Ezpeleta, Sara. NABARRA: Bera, Elizondo, Etxalar, Iruna,Ituren, Leiza, Lesaka, Zizur, Zugarramurdi....

I am replying to posting #1782, Dated July, 2007. She stated her maiden name was Arburua. Mine is also. My Grandfather and Grandmother both came from Navarra (Echalar). He was born 1844 and arrived in San Francisco 1866. My Father told me he came around the Horn and stopped for sometime in South America. My Grandmother while fron Navarra, was from another town. Her full name was Josfa Labayen immigrating to California 1871. If it would help you, I have records going back 11 generations on my Father's side. I have tried to get more information from the Mormon Church, but I have been told by a distant cousin they are in old Spanis and she could not translate. I live in San Franciso. May I ask where she resides?

hola mi nombre es c. arburua y tengo mi familia en leon. tambien son arburua. nosotros somos desendientes de los vascos de guipuscua o como sea que se escriba. les abradeceria mucho si tuviera noticias de otro arburua que tan pocos conocidos somos si es que hay algun familiar o si quiza pueden contar algo de la historia de este nombre de donde viene, segun se significa cabeza dura y puedo jurar que a todos los arburua que conozco si lo son je je je. muchas gracis y desde ya un gran beso y atento saludo a todos los arburua...
