Arando

ARANDO

The surname is found in Durango, Ugao-Miravalles, and in Ermua (Vizcaya). It also has houses in Eibar, Bergara, and Aguinaga (Guipuzcoa).

Arando means "place of plum trees" (Aran - plum tree and do - shows location). There is also a valley called Aran in the Basque country and some authors record that the last name may indicate that the original house may have been found in that valley.

Since the person who requested this search has no interest in the coat of arms, I have simply chosen the one from Vizcaya for others who may read this from the list: The coat of arms is divided into two halves, vertically. On the left half is a red lion standing on it's hind legs upon a field of silver. The right half has a field of red upon which is a silver bridge. On the bridge is a silver tower topped with a golden flag. Under the bridge is pictured a river and to the right of it is a green rosemary bush. Around both sides is a border of gold with eight blue spear rings.

Hi! I'm in San Francisco, California formerly from the Philippines too. My dad is Rafael Barranechearando Jr., although we've been using Arando for quite a while now. What I know is that my grandfather, Rafael Sr., had lots of brothers (7, I think). Although, I only knew my Bito, as most did not make it through WWI. By the way, my Bit-bit is still alive, she is 95. She is from Barcelona, Milagros De La Pena Arando. Like I said, I grew up in the Philippines and I know I still have cousins there. I would love to get to know the rest of you!

Hola, Soy Rafael Barrenechea-Arando im living here in San Francisco, California. My family migrated to the USA in 1981, from Manila, Philippines. We too are looking to get in touch with other family members who are trying to trace our roots back to Spain. Why is there no record of our family past the 1800's?

Ive heard stories from my Grandmother of the a Barrenechea-Arando who was Exiled from Spain to the Philippines for being a revolutionary, he was the first of our family to leave Spain for the Philippines. Has anyone ells heard of this story?

Querido Ignacio,

Si, yo soy tu pariente. Nicanor Barrenchea-Arando.

Dear Horacio,

My complete maiden name is Barrenechea-Arando. It is a unique last name where both basque houses where combined into one, Barrenchea and Arando. I now live in the U.S. with my husband Alfonso Pijuan. My grandma said that the barrenchea in the Philippines are probably related to me.

Hola.

I do not know if my last note posted. I don't think it did. But anyways I will write again. My last name is Aranda and I know I am of Spanish descent. I live in North Carolina, my father immigrated from Honduras to Florida then North Carolina. I do know that he looks very different from most people in his country. People in his country called his family "white people" because they were not as dark as the mestizo people there are, so possibly he could be some basque. I do know that his mother's surname, Duarte, is a basque name I think. The other surnames I know of are Sol and Jordan. I thought that "Jordan" was strange for a Hispanic surname. So is Aranda basically the same name as Arando and is it basque? Also, if you have any information on "Duarte" or "Jordan" I would love to have it.

Muchas Gracias,
Josh
