ALZATE
The origin is a house or farm with this name in Ondarrabia (Fuenterrabia),
there are two more houses with this name, one in Elgoibar, and the other in
Irun, but both are derivated from the first. There is also a house in
Uart-Zize in the french basque Province of Baxe-Navarre, and there are
authors that think that this is the original one. There are branches in the
whole basque Country (Spanish and French)
Simon Alzate proved his nobility in Motriko, in 1567.
Meaning: There are two theories about the meaning. The first component of
this surname is ALZ, or ALTZ, and the meaning is "Alder tree", the second
component is ATE, that means door, entrance, pass, gorge...., but some
authors think that is a variation of ETA that means:plurality. So the
meaning of this surname is: (the house) in the entrance of the Alder tree
place, or (the house)in the gorge (or mountain pass) of the Alder trees.
And the other possibility is: (the house in the) Alder tree place.
Proves of Nobility: Motriko 1567, Antonio Alzate born in Ondarrabia was
knight of Alcantara in 1622 (To prove nobility was only necesary to prove
to be basque, that was necesary to live in a city having the privileges of
the nobles, or to have any political responability, or...)
Coat of arms: there are four coats, depending of the house, the original

Gracias. Juan Alzate. |

Hi! This is the meaning I've been told, but then again...is it really?
Arzate
Basque: topographic name for someone living in a mountain pass named for its abundance of stones, from artza ‘stony place’ (from (h)ar(ri) ‘stone’ + -tza ‘abundance of’) + ate ‘pass’.
*Remember the Basque region is full of mountains with many passes. So, it's very likely this is the most accurate of meanings.
I don't know about you guys, but I used to have the hardest time with my last name due to the fact that people and school teachers used to butcher it. Over the years I have learned to appreciate it a lot more. It's unique and there's no mistaken who people call when they call my name.
And yes for the record, I've seen many people change the last name once they migrated due to lack of speaking the new language. Remember most spoke the one of the many Basque dialects like my family. Some spoke Italian, and a couple from the UK that spoke true English (still were former Basque, but migrated to UK with beautiful English accents) when they arrived on the ships to Ellis Island in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Those that continued to Vera Cruz, Mexico or South America (e.g. Columbia and Venezuela) fell into the same steps.
Happy Monday, my fellow Arzates.
Many Blessings,
Rose Arzate

The definition of Arzate was listed above on another mailers note. It is the same defination that I have seen for Alzate...
I am an Arzate and am glad to see that there are others that share the nane with me (that I am not directly related to)...I have 11 brothers and sisters. We were all born in Orange Co., Ca.
I have found it very interesting to view the geneology web sites....Our name is uncommon so the information is quick and easy to view. |

| Agur! My name is Olga Valdés Arzate.I live in Mexico. My grandmother told me that my grandfather, Apolonio Arzate came to Mexico with his family from Donostia. Also known as San Sebastian. In the Basque Country. They settled in the Esatado de Mexico. They had an hacienda called San Mateo Atenco. The original last name was Alzate, but for some reason that Ican't remember, the l was substituted by a r.His father's name was Antonio. It was a custom at the time( around the late 1700's)for the workers of the haciendas to adopt the last name of the owner of the hacienda. For this reason, (and maybe some of you might not like this)there are many Arzates who are not really blood- related to the original family.Yes, it is considered a noble family. That's why they were able to marry other nobility members like the Bobadilla. The information provided by me, was handed directly by my grandmother and is part of the geneology of my family. |

There was a Capitan Juan De Alzate de Olais who migrated from Spain to Colombia. I have no idea what the year was. I've included a link
http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=epareja&lang=en;p=juan;n=de+alzate+de+olais
Hope this helps everyone. I am looking for information about Zeas and Zuletas but Alzate is found on my mother's paternal side. If anyone alzate has a margarita alzate who was married to Miguel Zuleta please let me know. |

| Hi my name is Andres O. Alzate. I was born in Argelia, Colombia. I had the history of my name researched and found out that it originated in Basque territory, somewhere in a town close to the Spanish/French border. Also, the surname originated in a town where the original Alzate was knighted. He had a family and his children split into three groups. One group migrated to Colombia, another to Mexico and the third to Dublin, Ireland. I belive that the group that migrated to Dublin, Ireland may have ended up with the variation of the surname Arzate. I would be very interested to find out who was the first Alzate to migrate to Colombia, or at least a picture of the earliest Alzate. |

| Having recently encountered the surname "Original" in some date relating to the Cathar/Merovingian?Albigensian periods of Basque history, and to the Papal punitive and eliminative forays - "God will know his own, so kill them all" - regards beliefs contrary to those enforced by Rome within the period, I am interested to learn the derivation of the name, for what reasons it came into being, and whatever data there may be appellate to those to whom the name applied. |
