Thank you to Lawrence Larragoite for his generous financial contribution that made NMEE's participation in the 2006 Santa Fe Fiesta Historical Hysterical Parade possible. It is events like these that will help to educate many New Mexicans about their proud Basque heritage.
The 2006 Board would like to apologize to Lawrence for erroneously including Basque surnames that have not been in New Mexico for more than 100 years on one of the parade banners. This was a specific stipulation Lawrence made in his donation letter, and we greatly appreciate the patience and charity he has demonstrated since our error was discovered.
In an effort to help rectify the situation, we include the corrected list of Basque surnames here.
Thank you again, Lawrence!

2006 Santa Fe Fiesta Parade
| |
On September 10, NMEE took part in the Santa Fe Fiesta Parade. The parade went very well, with NMEE represented by a beautiful float depicting a traditional Basque family scene. Somewhere around 15 people marched with banners proudly displaying their surnames and coat-of-arms. We will soon have photographs from the parade in the gallery.

2006 NMEE Summer Picnic
|
Last weekend (August 27th), we held the second annual NMEE summer picnic. It was again held, as last year, at Santo Bueno Ranch in Pena Blanca, graciously hosted by Bob and Eva. While the turnout was a little less than we had hoped, those who did attend had a great time. We again had the traditional Basque games (soka-tira, egg toss, irintzi yell, and the txingas). Reyes cooked up chorizo and everyone else brought some wonderful food to share. And the sangria that Manuel made was excellent! Best of all, the weather held up for us this year and we didn't get soaked. Thanks to the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts for letting us use their canpoies, which protected us from the sun this year, instead of the rain and to Steve and Adam of Talon de Gato Farm in Apodaca for the wonderful peppers!
There are photos from the picnic in the Club Gallery.

Basque Heritage Night in Colorado
|
Last weekend, Manuel, his son Alex, Lisa and I (Blas) attended the Basque Heritage Night put together by the Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Euskal Etxea to welcome former Athletic Bilbao player Aitor Karanka to the Rapids team. The event was amazing! CEE had set up a Basque village in the parking lot of Invesco field (the stadium the Denver Broncos also play in), complete with paella provided a local Basque chef, drinks, and the Basque dance group from Buffalo, Wyoming! We sat in a section with maybe 100 to 200 other Basques, cheering Aitor every time he touched the ball. The Rapids ended up beating LA Galaxy 1-0. Afterwards, there was a question and answer session with Aitor, where he was asked how well he was adjusting to life in the US, how soccer compared here versus Spain, and if he would be attending next year's CEE picnic. The evening ended with Aitor signing memorabilia for everyone.
It was an awesome night! Kudos to the Colorado Euskal Etxea for a job well done!
There are more photos in the Club Gallery.

Donation by Lawrence Larragoite
| |
Lawrence Larragoite has kindly offered to help the club's efforts in the Santa Fe Fiesta Parade by making a donation to be used in preparation of the parade. He has asked the board to post a letter detailing the donation and his conditions for the donation. The purpose of the letter is to encourage discussion amongst the membership about the parade and how NMEE can best be represented.
The letter can be found here. Any comments, please send to both Lawrence's email address (given in the letter) and the club's email address (nmee@buber.net). Or, you can discuss this on the club forum. Registration is required for posting (just to eliminate spammers).
Eskerrik asko, Lawrence, for this extremely generous offer!
