See bottom of page for user contributed notes.
IRISARRI the usual form of this surname is IRISARRI, but there are many
variations: IRISARRY, IRISSARY, IRRISARRI, IRRISARRY, IRIZARRI, YRIZARI etc..
The meaning of this surname is: IRI means group of houses, or town, and
SARRI means thickset (refered to trees, forest, thickets etc..) or Thick
forest. So the meaning is something like, The group of houses near the
thickset.
The way you (the original requestor) write your surname is typical in branches of this family in
Mexico, Colombia and Argentina (there are also in the Basque Country).
The origin of this surname is a house in Ianzy or Yanzi, in Navarra, with
houses derived from this in Villatuerta, and Azketa (both in Navarre). But
there is another very old house with this name in IHOLDI in Baxe-Navarre, in
the French Basque Country; this name of this house is documented since
1352, but it could also be the house IRIZURI mentioned in documents of 1186; I
believe that this one is the real origin of the surname.
There are branches of this family in the whole Basque Country (Spanish and
French), and of course in Spain, France and America (Terranova included).
There are a lot of coats of arms of this surname depending on the branch.
The coat of the Branche IRIZARRI (the only branch with Z) is: En sinople
dos torres de oro puestas en faja. This Z branch exists (or existed) in
Bizkaia, Colombia, Argentina, Navarre, Mexico and Terre Neuve
There is also a coat of the branche of Chili.
Aida L. Irizarry writes Irizarry is also found in San German, Puerto Rico, where a branch of the family
settled in 1819. I would love you to add this piece of the missing puzzle to
your page. I'm very proud of this name and of my ancestors who carried it to
our shores.

Hi, my name is Joseph Yrisarri Stateson and I descended from one Don Pablo Yrisarri. Recently, I had an opportunity to visit his original home in Albuquerque which had been turned into a bed and breakfast. A photo of the historical plaque for the "hacienda" is here:

I know very little about where he came from prior to the 1700's and would be interested in learning more. |

I wrote previously. I just wanted to add that I read your note on how a branch of the Irizarry family settled in San German in 1819. This sounds accurate. My grandfather who was the Irizarry was born in 1900. His grandparents were from Spain. He was born in Las Marias, Puerto Rico. So it is very, very possible that his grandparents were part of that strain of Basque's that came from afar.

Pastor Angel Santos

Hi,
My mother's name was Raquel Irizarry Ramirez -- her siblings were Ramon, Pedro, Santiago, Candida and Tomas born in La Tea in San German. My Grandmother's maiden name was Ipolita Ramirez (her mother's was Sanchez Negron) and my grandfather was Meliton Irizarry. I'd love to know where to go to get more information on my ancestors from San German.

| My name is Ray Irizarry. My father, Ramon Maria Irizarry was born in a place called Moca, near Mayaguez, in 1908. My grandfather, also Ramon, whom I met only once in 1947, came from Spain, I think. (He was born in the 1870s when PR was part of Spain.) My paternal grandmother died in 1916, so I never met her. My dad had an older sister named Agripina (I'm not sure of the spelling) whom we called Pinita. She ran a General Store in Mayaguez until her death around 1966. Pinita had a daughter named Zaida, who, if alive, should be in her mid seventies. She was last known living in Mayaguez. My father also had an uncle and an aunt. Angel Irizarry moved to New York City around 1920 to start a business. My dad followed soon after. His aunt Lala Sparrow settled in Florida in the early 20th century while her husband helped build the Panama Canal. Angel had a son named Robert Irizarry, a WWII hero, who later worked for Remmington Rand in Conn. He may still be alive because old age seems an Irizarry characteristic. I, myself, lived in Santurce in 1947 and Arecibo in 1953. Today, I'm retired near Houston, Texas. |

My father was Luis Raśl Irizarri Varela, born in La Maya,Cuba. He lived in different towns in Oriente as well as my grandfather Luis Irizarri Fernandini who was born in Adjuntas, PR but lived and died in Cuba.
I was born in Banes, Oriente, Cuba . There was a family from PR who lived in Banes and spelled their surname like us, but were not related to us. There were other Irizarris in Camaguey, Cuba, with the same spelling but no relation either.
Any information?
By the way there is a town in Basque country on the way to France called Irizarri, unfortunately we had no time to visit. Has anyone gone or know anything about it? |

My first e-mail here was #3399 dated August, 2006. I was fascinated when I noticed that there are so many similar first names.
My full name is Linda Consuelo Irizarry Mendoza. The Consuelo comes from my grandmother whose maiden name was Guasp.
Consuelo and Manolo Irizarry had five children:
Carmen,(Yaya), Manuel, Ruben, Alma y Frank D.(Dido).
I want to give you a breakdown of our immediate family.
Carmen: daughter #1 never married and was the Saint aunt of the family.
Manuel: first born son, married Estelle.
Children: Mary Joan Irizarry, Michael Irizarry, Steven Irizarry and Nelson Irizarry. (Dr. Estelle Irizarry, Manuel Jr.'s wife was a professor at Gerorgetown University and has written many historical books dealing with our heritage and the Basque roots. Worth looking into)
Ruben: third child, son #2, married Adriana Mendoza Cruz from Adjuntas
Children: Alma Jeannette Irizarry, Linda Consuelo Irizarry and
David Gil Irizarry.
Alma Consuelo: second daughter; fourth child, married Ceferino (tio Frank) Manzano from Salamanca Spain
Children: Alma Consuelo Manzano Irizarry, Brenda Muriel Manzano Irizarry
and twin girls: Sylvia and Teresa Manzano Irizarry
Dido: Youngest, the fifth child. Married after forty. No kids. He was a NYC Police Officer/Detective for over twenty years.
All modesty aside. You can probably look any of us up on the internet and see many of our accomplishments that would make any Irizarry proud.
This group should plan to perhaps have some sort of reunion.
Any thoughts on this? I live in Austin, Texas but I'll fly just about anywhere.
Take care,
Linda I.
