In the Heart of the Basque Country

Part One

Deba Garaia, which is right in the heart of the Basque Country offers such a wealth of varied possibilities for tourism, that the numerous people who come to visit the area are tryly suprised.

This is not in the least because it a has typical architecture of the area, with several medieval towns, the margellous modern Arantzazu Sanctuary, the only cloister built over a river, the laborartoy where wolfram was discovered and architecture of an industrial nature dating from the beginning of the century.

Sports lovers have unlimited possibilities of climbing peaks such as Aitzgorri and Udalaitz, strolling around the spectacular Urkulu reservoir, horse riding or just simply enjoying the beautiful landscape.

There are also wide-ranging gastronomic possibilities. You can have an exceptionally good meal in almost all the area's restaurant, many of which are in the country. And if you get to know somebody from the area, you can always invite them to one of the over hundred "txokos" (cozy bars where nibbles can also be eaten).

For those of you who like to know about social customs, perhaps you ought to know that 64% of the population speak the Basque language, and that over 6,000 people are shareholders in cooperatives organized within a modern corporation.
